This painting "Kraut" is the second work in my series of "Fermented Florals" where I paint the most gorgeous bouquets I could think of, in hilariously opposing jars of fermented foods like pickles. If you know me well, you know that I love pickles and sauerkraut and sourdough bread! All of the above being fermented foods. I love the opposing feelings of using a random kitchen jar that you create stinky salty foods in becoming a vessel for such beauty. I'm sure there's a metaphor in there somewhere!
Sauerkraut holds a special place in my heart, not only because it's delicious and fun to make, but because my ancestors kept a huge crock of it in their dirt cellar and ate it all winter. It sounds so amazing to me, and in the age we are living in where everything is done for us, there is something beautiful in making something yourself like those who have come before you and hopefully those who will come after!
